Scarlet Ibis

Scarlet Ibis

The importance of symbolism in James Hurst's "The Scarlet Ibis" is at the scarlet ibis is known as a fragile bird. The scarlet ibis symbolizes the little brother Doodle. Doodle is a little boy who was born very sickly. The scarlet ibis in the story is sick as well. What is a symbol? Symbol is using an object or action that means something more than it's literal meaning.

In the story "Scarlet Ibis" it all has a meaning. It's about a boy who has a sickly little brother. The brother is embarrassed and disliked having the little brother "Doodle was born when I was seven and was, from the start, a disappointment." He named his brother Doodle because he felt any other name would be to good for him "Renaming my brother was probably the kindest thing I ever did for him, because nobody expects much from someone called Doodle." Doodle was unable to walk and do things other kids could. He was born very sickly and his parents didn't expect him to live a long time. School time was coming and Doodle's brother was so ashamed of him he forced Doodle to learn how to walk. Doodle had a hard time learning but he did. Doodle's parents noticed he learned how to walk and were very happy that they thanked the brother but they had no idea that he only taught his little brother to walk for his own selfish reasons. One day they found the bird "Scarlet Ibis" under the bleeding tree very weak and he died. Doodle buried the bird. After that the brother took Doodle to learn how to run. Doodle couldn't though. A big rain storm was approaching and the brother started running Doodle who was too weak and couldn't run like his brother he screamed " Don't Leave Me" but the brother left him behind. He came back but it was too late. Doodle died. He died like the scarlet ibis.

When I read this story from the beginning I felt bad for Doodle. I pictured him as a little humble boy who loved his big brother more than words can explain. His brother wasn't ever nice to him neither did he put himself in his position and think about Doodle's feelings. I understood why the brother would be a little embarrassed but I wouldn't be for the same reason as he was. I would worry about them making fun of Doodle and it would hurt me because I would love him. The brother worried about himself and I just didn't understand how he could feel that way against his little brother Doodle it wasn't his fault he was born sickly.
